A Middlesbrough social club has donated £28,855.50 to help reduce waiting times for cancer patients at The James Cook University Hospital. The Beechwood, Easterside and District Social Club, located directly opposite the hospital on Broadwell Road, provided the funds to purchase a new bladder scanner for the hospital’s radiotherapy unit.

The donation was made through Our Hospitals Charity, the official fundraising arm of the South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. According to the hospital, the new equipment is vital for patients preparing for radiotherapy, as it helps doctors accurately assess bladder volume to ensure consistent positioning during treatment. This purchase will directly shorten the time patients spend waiting for their sessions.

The cheque was presented by the club’s entertainment manager, Harry Dunn, and club secretary Mick Smith. Both men have personal experience with prostate cancer treatment at the hospital, highlighting the community’s close connection to the facility. The social club has supported the hospital for more than 50 years.

The club, which has over 3,000 members, has a long history of community involvement and was named Charity Club of the Year at the 2025 Club Mirror Awards. The hospital operates as part of the University Hospitals Tees group, which provides radiotherapy services for the wider region.
