A Crawley man has been sentenced to five years in prison following a violent assault against a woman in her home. Tiago Nunes, 28, of Westminster Road, appeared at Lewes Crown Court on 15 April 2026, where he was sentenced for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of a weapon in public.

The court heard that on 15 March 2024, Nunes, who was believed to be under the influence of drugs, became aggressive inside the victim’s home. He prevented the woman from leaving, smashed her mobile phone, and choked her. These crimes also placed him in breach of a suspended sentence he had previously received for grievous bodily harm without intent.

Nunes has a history of violent behaviour in the local area, including a 2022 conviction for an unprovoked attack outside a bar in Crawley that left another victim unconscious and with a bleed on the brain. Investigating officer PC Bryony Tarrant of Sussex Police stated that the force takes reports of domestic abuse extremely seriously and that tackling violence against women and girls remains a priority.

Local authorities are continuing to focus on domestic abuse as a critical community issue. In 2025, Sussex Police recorded 29,601 domestic abuse crimes, though officials acknowledge this figure likely represents only a portion of actual incidents. On 27 March 2026, West Sussex County Council unanimously passed a formal agreement reaffirming its commitment to tackling such violence and calling for tougher penalties for those who commit these crimes.
