The South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust is urging residents across South Tyneside and Sunderland to plan ahead for the upcoming May bank holidays by ensuring they have enough prescription medication. With GP surgeries operating at reduced hours on 4 May and 25 May 2026, officials are encouraging patients to request repeat prescriptions well in advance.

Dr Shaz Wahid, the Trust’s Executive Medical Director, noted that bank holidays are traditionally busy periods for local health services. He emphasised that preparing in advance helps ensure that staff can focus on those who need care the most during these long weekends.

For those who need advice on minor ailments, some pharmacies will remain open and can provide support through the Think Pharmacy First scheme. Residents are also encouraged to check their home first aid cabinets to ensure they are well stocked with essentials.

For non-emergency health concerns, the Trust recommends using NHS 111 Online as a first point of contact to check symptoms and find the most appropriate treatment. The hospital Emergency Department will remain open 24 hours a day for serious and life-threatening conditions. However, patients arriving with less urgent needs may face longer wait times and could be directed to alternative services to ensure priority care for the most seriously ill or injured.
