Portsmouth actor and television star Shaun Williamson has been named the first patron of Portsmouth Theatres since the organisation was formed by the merger of two of the city’s most historic venues. The appointment marks a new chapter for the group, which brought together The Kings Theatre and New Theatre Royal under a single leadership team on 30 April 2025.
Known to many for his decade-long role as Barry Evans in the television series EastEnders, Williamson has become a familiar face to local theatregoers. He recently performed in the Portsmouth production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as the Toymaker. Following this success, he will return to the stage at The Kings Theatre this festive season to play the villain Fleshcreep in the pantomime Jack and the Beanstalk.
The merger of the two venues is considered a milestone for the city, as Portsmouth is the only place outside London to house two operating theatres designed by the renowned architect Frank Matcham. The Kings Theatre, which first opened its doors on 30 September 1907, remains a key part of this cultural heritage as a Grade II* listed building.
Williamson joins a group of existing patrons including Emma Barton, Hugh Dennis, Fred Dinenage MBE, Anita Harris, Dame Vikki Heywood DBE, Sir Clive Jones CBE, Dillie Keane, and Lord Mayor Gerald Vernon-Jackson CBE. Under the guidance of CEO Richard Pearce, the unified organisation continues its work on the Elevation 1907 project, which aims to convert derelict shops on Albert Road into new facilities for the theatre, including an accessible foyer, bar, and rehearsal area.
Artistic Director and Deputy CEO Jack Edwards, who will also appear as the Dame in this year’s pantomime, welcomed the appointment as a significant step for the community-focused organisation.
