Households across Swadlincote and surrounding areas are facing disruptions to waste collection services due to operational issues within the local council. The service failure, which was acknowledged by South Derbyshire District Council, has resulted in missed bin collections for residents across multiple streets.

The council has advised residents whose bins were not collected on their usual day to keep them out. Officials have confirmed that collection crews will work to empty the missed bins as soon as possible.

The current disruption follows similar challenges faced by the district in October 2025, when staff shortages led to missed collections on 112 streets. At that time, Heidi McDougall, the council’s executive director for environment and communities, noted that shortages had caused a small percentage of bins to be missed across the district, which sees approximately 76,883 bins collected on a weekly basis.

Affected residents in Swadlincote, along with those in other areas of the district, can find further details regarding the status of local collections on the council’s disruption to bin collections page.

These operational pressures come as the local authority prepares for the launch of a new weekly food waste collection service on 1 June 2026. This upcoming project has faced challenges related to vehicle supply issues, which are currently affecting many councils across the country.
