Authorities in Peterborough seized 38 boxes of suspected stolen Apple AirPod headphones during a joint enforcement operation at the Wellington Street car boot sale on Sunday, 26 April 2026. The effort was part of a partnership between Peterborough City Council Regulatory Services, the local police, and Peterborough Positive to combat the sale of illicit goods.

The operation was launched in response to concerns raised by local retailers who suspected that items stolen from their shops were being sold at the car boot sale. Inspector Sam Tucker of the Peterborough City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team noted that the police have been working closely with these partner agencies to address the issue of shoplifting.

This initiative builds on previous enforcement actions, including an operation in 2025 where authorities seized over 675 items worth approximately £10,000. That haul, which included confectionery, cosmetics, and household products, was donated to Care Zone, a local charity that supports vulnerable families.

According to feedback from stallholders, the increased presence of police and council officers at the event has been effective in deterring the sale of counterfeit merchandise. The partnership continues to monitor the site to ensure it remains a fair environment for legitimate traders.
