The Metrocentre in Gateshead is marking its 40th anniversary this year, celebrating four decades as a major retail destination for the North East. Since its first phase opened on 28 April 1986, the centre has grown to welcome approximately 16 million visitors annually.

Developed by Cameron Hall Developments on the site of the former Dunston Power Station, the venue remains the second-largest shopping centre in the UK. Throughout its history, the site has transformed significantly, including the period between 1988 and 2008 when it housed the Metroland indoor amusement park.

To kick off the anniversary celebrations, the centre hosted a Spring-Summer Fashion & Beauty Weekender on 25 April and 26 April 2026. This event, which featured television presenter AJ Odudu, resulted in a 14 per cent increase in footfall compared to the same period last year.

Looking ahead, the Sovereign Centros management team is overseeing a £6 million project to create The Crescent in the upper Green Mall area. This development is designed to provide new space for independent and local brands.
