The North Northamptonshire Council has launched a public consultation to gather feedback on a new masterplan designed to shape the future of Wellingborough town centre over the next decade. Residents are encouraged to share their views on the draft plan until 15 June 2026, which aims to address the town’s structural needs and market challenges.
Wellingborough was chosen as the starting point for this regeneration initiative following an independent review of four growth towns in the region. The review identified that the town presents the most significant opportunity for development due to its existing assets, potential redevelopment sites, and a lack of recent external funding investment. The project to review the town centre and develop the masterplan is budgeted at £65,000.
To help residents understand the proposals, the council is hosting two open days where people can learn about the plans and ask questions. The first event will take place on 12 May 2026 at Swansgate Shopping Centre, followed by a second session at Wellingborough Library on 27 May 2026. Both events are open from 10am to 4pm.
The masterplan has been developed through engagement with a stakeholder group that includes representatives from Wellingborough Town Council, Northamptonshire Police, local businesses, and community organisations. The initiative also seeks to ensure that major new housing growth at nearby developments, such as Stanton Cross and Glenvale Park, helps to support and strengthen the town centre rather than bypassing it.
Cllr Jan O’Hara, Executive Member for Planning and Economic Growth, noted that the council has worked closely with various stakeholders to reach this stage. She emphasised the importance of community input on the draft, which outlines the council’s vision for a proud, vibrant, and welcoming town centre. After the consultation period ends, the feedback will be analysed and presented to the council’s executive later in 2026, with plans to follow a similar approach for Kettering.
