A 19-year-old football coach from Washington has successfully launched his own business, Technical Focus, with help from a local support scheme. Frazer Barker, who also plays Northern League football, started the company to provide group coaching, one-to-one sessions, and holiday activities for children aged six and older.
The venture, which currently serves more than 40 young people each week at The Millenium Centre and The Hub, was made possible through the Enterprising Sunderland project. This initiative provided Barker with expert guidance from the North East Business and Innovation Centre. His adviser, Helen Wardropper, assisted him with essential business tasks such as registering with the government, creating a business plan, and building professional networks.
Barker said that his own background in sport inspired him to start the business, as he hopes to encourage more young people to stay physically active and learn new life skills. Sessions through his company currently start from £15.
The support Barker received was part of a larger effort funded by the UK government to boost local enterprise. Sunderland City Council managed these funds on behalf of the Sunderland Partnership, and the programme has now been extended through December 2026 with backing from the North East Combined Authority.
