Biddick Academy in Washington has been awarded a top rating of “Strong standard” by Ofsted following an inspection carried out on 10 March 2026. The school, which is part of the North East Learning Trust, received the highest possible rating across all five evaluated categories, Overall effectiveness, Attendance and behaviour, Inclusion, Leadership and governance, and Personal development and wellbeing.
This result marks a significant improvement for the school, which although ranked “Good” previously it had been told it required improvements in behaviour and attitudes during an inspection in February 2022. Inspectors found that rapid and lasting changes have been implemented since the academy joined the trust, which is led by Chief Executive Officer Dame Lesley Powell.
The latest report highlights that attendance has risen significantly, with staff now meeting daily to review attendance records and offer prompt support to pupils who are missing learning. Performance for disadvantaged pupils has also shown marked growth, with 22.4% achieving grade 5 or above in English and maths during the 2024/25 academic year.
Beyond academic results, the inspectors praised the school’s high-quality pastoral care and personal development programmes. Pupils are now participating in a wide variety of activities including rowing, choir, and drama. The academy also maintains specialised support for 29 students with autism spectrum disorder.
During the inspection process, students expressed that they feel safe and valued at the school. One pupil remarked: “This is a really supportive school. Teachers will help you as much as they can.”
