A community choir based in Southend has funded new medical equipment for the neonatal unit at Southend Hospital to help make care gentler for newborn babies. Through its ongoing concert series, the Vocal Ease choir has purchased a handheld vein finder for the ward.
The device uses near-infrared technology to help doctors locate veins quickly and accurately, which reduces the need for repeated needle attempts. This helps keep babies comfortable during procedures and lowers the level of stress for parents. The equipment was donated through the Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity.
Jen Foster, the neonatal ward manager at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, said the new technology makes care much more comfortable for the smallest patients. She expressed her gratitude for the choir’s continued support of the hospital.
The fundraising effort is personal for Vocal Ease founder Lesley Fleming, whose grandson received lifesaving care at the neonatal unit after being admitted shortly after his birth. Since 2009, the choir has raised more than £15,000 for the unit through its various performances and events.
