Tunbridge Wells Borough Council launched a new grant programme on 5 May 2026 to help local schools reduce their carbon footprint and improve environmental sustainability. The initiative, known as the Schools Climate Action Grant, provides a total of £10,000 in funding to be shared among schools across the borough.

Individual schools may apply for up to £2,500 to support practical projects. These can include a range of eco-friendly upgrades, such as installing solar panels, adding electric vehicle charging points, or switching to energy-saving LED lighting. The funding is also available for initiatives like planting trees, creating allotments or greenhouses for growing food, and general improvements to outdoor green spaces or school buildings.

This grant is part of the council’s wider Local Climate Action Fund for the 2026/27 financial year, which also includes support for local businesses and community groups. The programme supports the council’s long-term commitment to reaching net zero carbon emissions across the borough by 2030, a goal established following the declaration of a climate and biodiversity emergency in July 2019.

Applications must be submitted by Friday 22 May 2026, and all successful projects are to be completed by January 2027. Schools can find application forms and further guidance on the TWBC Climate Action website. If school staff have questions during the application process, the council’s Sustainability Team is available to help and can be contacted via email at [email protected].
