Residents in Folkestone who face challenges finding or keeping a job can now access additional employment support through a new phase of the Connect to Work programme. The initiative is designed to assist people with disabilities, long-term health conditions, or other complex barriers to employment.

The Kent County Council and Medway Council have commissioned Shaw Trust, The Forward Trust, and The Education People to deliver this support in the local area. This government-backed scheme is funded by the Department for Work and Pensions as part of the national Get Britain Working initiative.

Participants in the programme can receive help with career planning, CV writing, and interview preparation. Advisers also work with individuals to identify suitable roles, arrange necessary workplace adjustments, and provide guidance on managing health conditions while in employment. The service uses a place, train, and maintain approach to help residents secure and keep sustainable work.

Since the programme launched in July 2025, more than 890 people across Kent and Medway have signed up, resulting in over 120 job starts. Local authorities aim to support over 9,000 individuals through the four-year programme, which forms part of a wider national effort to reach 100,000 people annually at peak delivery across England and Wales.

The Connect to Work programme is voluntary and intended for anyone who needs extra support to overcome barriers to entering the workforce. Residents can learn more about the available support by visiting the Connect to Work portal on the council website.
