York City Football Club has announced the signing of midfielder Mark Shelton as the team prepares for its return to the English Football League. The 29-year-old will officially join the squad on 1 July 2026 once his contract at Barnet FC concludes.

This signing follows the club’s successful campaign in the National League, where they finished as champions with 108 points. Under the guidance of manager Stuart Maynard, the team secured promotion on 25 April 2026 during a final-day match against Rochdale. In a dramatic finish at the LNER Community Stadium rivals, Josh Stones scored a 103rd-minute equaliser to confirm the club’s return to the Football League after a 10-year absence.

Shelton brings extensive experience to the side, having been part of three previous promotions from the National League with Salford City, Hartlepool United, and Barnet. During the 2025-26 season, he made 40 league appearances for Barnet, helping the club secure an eighth-place finish in League Two.

The addition of the midfielder is a key move for the club as it looks to establish itself following its promotion from the National League. York City will continue to play its home matches at the 8,500-capacity LNER Community Stadium in Huntington as the team prepares for the upcoming season.
