Swindon Borough Council is moving forward with plans to transform the long-vacant Signal Point building and the surrounding area near the train station as part of a major regeneration project. The 12-storey office block, which has stood empty for years, is a central focus of the new Knowledge Central scheme, an initiative aimed at creating thousands of jobs and hundreds of homes on over 100 acres of brownfield land.
To support this effort, Swindon Borough Council has secured £300,000 in funding from Homes England. This includes £100,000 specifically for designing a new northern entrance to the station and a multi-storey car park, alongside £200,000 to develop a comprehensive business case for the site.
The Signal Point building has remained derelict since Network Rail took back ownership of the site on 10 August 2020. Despite hopes for its redevelopment following that change in control, the building has continued to sit empty. A dedicated partnership, which includes the local council, the rail industry, Business West, and other government agencies, is now working to accelerate progress on the project.
Councillor Jim Robbins, leader of the council, described the recent movement on the site as an important step in transforming the area into a high-quality district. The project forms part of the wider Heart of Swindon vision, which includes ambitions for up to 8,000 new homes in the town centre. Representatives from the council will present the Knowledge Central plans to potential investors at the UKREiiF 2026 event, taking place in Leeds from 19 to 21 May 2026.
