Work has officially begun on a new medical scanning facility near Poole Hospital, a move designed to help patients get their scans sooner. Demolition of the existing Shaftesbury House building on Shaftesbury Road started on 7 May 2026 to make way for the new site.

The project received the green light from BCP Council on 30 April 2026. This development is part of a larger £500m effort by University Hospitals Dorset to improve diagnostic services for people living in Bournemouth, Poole, and the surrounding areas.

Matthew Benbow, the trust’s CT and MRI service manager, stated ‘We’re incredibly excited about the plans for this new facility and the potential further investment going into the Poole Hospital site.” The centre is intended to provide a modern, purpose-built space that will help lower waiting times for patients needing vital diagnostic imaging.

This new facility is one part of a wider strategy as Poole Hospital prepares to become the largest planned care hospital in the UK later in 2026. These improvements are being complemented by the recently opened community diagnostic imaging centre at the Health Sciences University in Poole. The trust is providing regular updates to local residents through monthly newsletters as construction moves forward.
