Sunderland residents, schools, community groups, and local businesses are being invited to take part in a flashmob and music video for a new city anthem. The event will take place on Saturday 23 May 2026 at 3pm in Keel Square.
The anthem, titled Open Arms, was commissioned by Sunderland City Council and written by the local teenage girl band Northern Daughters. The song serves as a celebration of the city’s people and culture. This performance is part of the One Big Summer launch, which celebrates the return of BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend to the city from 22 to 24 May 2026.
To prepare for the filming, the band and the I-Stage Group will visit schools and community organisations to teach an inclusive and simple dance routine. The movements are designed to be accessible for people of all ages and abilities. Those who prefer to practice at home can also find the choreography on the band’s TikTok account.
The project is supported by funding from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Anyone interested in participating in the flashmob is encouraged to register by emailing [email protected] and is asked to arrive early at Keel Square on the day of the filming.
