Lighthouse Poole has officially launched its first youth theatre programme, opening applications for young people aged 5 to 15 to take part in performing arts sessions starting this autumn.
The new initiative, known as Lighthouse Youth Theatre, is designed to help children and teenagers develop skills such as confidence, collaboration, and communication. Sessions will be held on Saturdays during term time, with participants divided into three age groups: 5-7, 8-11, and 12-15 years. The programme will build towards an end-of-year production performed on the main stage at the arts centre, which is located at 21 Kingland Road.
According to Martha Earley, the Creative Engagement Manager at the venue, the programme offers young people a chance to learn how a theatre production is created from the page to the stage. To ensure the programme is accessible to all, it is open to everyone with no audition required. The initiative also includes bursaries for those facing financial barriers, as well as accessible application routes and support provisions.
Funding for the project is provided by the Arbor Vitae Foundation, a Dorset-based charity. Linda Cartwright, a chair-trustee for the foundation, noted that this is their first major grant and that the funding is intended to ensure that talented young people from all backgrounds have the opportunity to participate and thrive.
Participants will also be able to connect with existing academy offerings at the centre, including Young Writers, Young Technicians, and Young Producers. This provides members with additional benefits such as backstage tours, discounted tickets, and invitations to open dress rehearsals.
Research from Youth Theatre Arts indicates that involvement in youth theatre can provide long-term benefits, including enhanced emotional intelligence, improved leadership skills, and better emotional wellbeing. Families interested in learning more can find further details about the Lighthouse Youth Theatre on the venue’s website.
