Bus operator Arriva is set to overhaul the bus network in Luton and Dunstable on Sunday 31 May 2026, introducing simpler routes and more frequent services across the town. These changes, led by Network Manager Matt King, aim to improve connections for residents travelling to local destinations including the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital (L&D Hospital), Marsh Farm, and London Luton Airport.

As part of the update, five new or replacement routes will begin service. This includes Service 5 replacing route 29, Service 6 replacing route 27, Service 6A replacing route 28, and Service 7 replacing routes 23 and 23A. Services 5, 6, and 7 will run every 15 minutes; Service 6A frequency is to be confirmed. Additionally, a new Route W will provide a direct link to the White Lion Retail Park every 15 minutes. While Service 15 to Farley Hill is being withdrawn due to low passenger numbers, residents can continue to use Service 1, which provides a frequent link between Farley Hill, Luton, and Dunstable every 15 minutes.

The changes also include significant improvements to the local guided busway system. Combined services will create a turn-up-and-go frequency of every 7-8 minutes between Luton Airport and Dunstable/Luton. Furthermore, long-distance links are being enhanced, with Service X1 from Milton Keynes now using the Busway and extending to London Luton Airport, and Service X4 from Aylesbury also extending to the airport with support from Buckinghamshire Council and Central Bedfordshire Council, with Sunday services between Leighton Buzzard and Aylesbury returning for the first time in over five years.

These service updates are supported by government funding, with Luton Borough Council receiving £6,332,356 and Central Bedfordshire Council receiving just over £3 million through a national bus service improvement plan. Passengers are advised to check the latest timetables before travelling, as industrial action involving bus engineers has been scheduled for 11-15 May and 25-29 May 2026.
