A 40-year-old man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder following a collision in Norwich that left a cyclist in a critical condition. David Morgan, of George Winter Court, appeared at Norwich Magistrates Court on 11 May 2026 following the incident which occurred on Chartwell Road at approximately 5pm on 8 May 2026.
The victim, a man in his 50s named Daniel Smith, remains in hospital with serious head injuries. During the hearing, the court was told that the victim currently faces a very remote chance of survival. Prosecutor Josephine Jones stated that the collision was a deliberate targeting of a cyclist and warned that the charges could be upgraded if the victim passes away.
According to the Norfolk Constabulary, the incident involved a white Mercedes C180 that failed to stop at the scene. Mr Morgan was later arrested by officers on Bignold Road shortly before 7pm and was subsequently questioned at the Wymondham Police Investigation Centre.
In addition to the attempted murder charge, the defendant faces a charge of driving with excess alcohol. District Judge Jacqui Appleton determined that the charges were of such a serious nature that the case must be heard at the Crown Court. Mr Morgan has been remanded in custody and is set to appear at Norwich Crown Court on 8 June 2026.
