Residents in West Northamptonshire who struggle to afford or access the internet can now receive free SIM cards through a new scheme launched by West Northamptonshire Council. Starting 11 May 2026, nine council-run libraries have begun providing data, calls, and texts to help local people get connected.

The initiative is a partnership with the Good Things Foundation and its National Databank, which provides support for those facing digital poverty. Participating branches include libraries in Brackley, Brixworth, Daventry, Deanshanger, Duston, Hunsbury, Northamptonshire Central, Weston Favell, and Towcester.

The SIM cards have been donated by mobile network providers Vodafone, Virgin Media O2, and Three. Depending on the provider, residents can receive data, calls, and texts for a period ranging from one month to up to a year, or as a one-off data allowance.

To be eligible, residents must be aged 18 or over and from a low-income household that has no or limited internet access at home or while away, or who cannot afford their current mobile contract. No formal evidence is required to sign up. Interested residents can visit their local library, where staff will guide them through the registration process on the National Databank platform.

Cllr James Petter, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Local Economy, Culture and Leisure, stated that access to the internet is an essential part of everyday life. He added that the scheme helps ensure residents facing financial challenges are not left behind and can remain connected to the services and opportunities they need.
