Commuters in Lancaster will face changes to the local Park and Ride service starting 6 July 2026, as buses will run less frequently and ticket prices are set to rise.

The Lancashire County Council has announced that Service L1, which runs between the Caton Road site, the city centre, and the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, will shift from running every 15 minutes to every 30 minutes, Monday through Saturday. The increase in ticket costs will see day return fares rise from £2.00 to £2.50.

These adjustments follow the conclusion of a funding agreement with the National Health Service. Since 2019, health officials had provided funding for an additional bus to support staff travel to the hospital.

Despite the changes to frequency and pricing, the route itself and the times for the first and last buses of the day will remain the same. Parking at the Caton Road site, which offers approximately 650 spaces, will continue to be free for those using the service.

County Councillor Warren Goldsworthy, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, stated that the changes are necessary to ensure the service remains viable for the many people who rely on it. The service, operated by Lonsdale Buses on behalf of the county council, was originally launched in 2016 before the frequency was increased three years later with the help of the additional funding.

Residents are encouraged to check the updated timetables before travelling after 6 July 2026.
