Residents in Luton are invited to join free weekly nature conservation sessions this summer to help look after the town’s green spaces. Organised by the Luton Borough Council’s Parks and Countryside Service, the volunteer programme runs every Monday from 20 April to 6 July 2026.

The sessions take place between 10am and 3pm at various wildlife sites across the town. Activities include habitat surveys, meadow management, and the removal of invasive plants such as Himalayan balsam, which can threaten native wildlife. All necessary tools, training, and personal protective equipment are provided, along with hot drinks and biscuits for those taking part. Typically, five to 12 volunteers attend each session.

This initiative helps manage 19 local wildlife sites, including nationally designated areas like Galley and Warden Hills and Dallow Downs, which are overseen in partnership with the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. The work also supports the broader goals of the Bedfordshire Local Nature Recovery Strategy, which was approved earlier this year to help restore nature and reverse wildlife decline. The programme is further supported by a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, which aims to improve community access to nature.

Volunteers must be aged 18 or over to participate. Anyone interested in joining is required to register in advance through the online application form on the Health and Nature Partnership website or by emailing [email protected].
