A 54-year-old man from Cheltenham, co-founder of the fashion brand Superdry, has been sentenced to eight years in prison after being convicted of raping a woman in her own home. James Holder was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court on 7 May 2026, following a trial where a jury found him guilty of the attack, which occurred in May 2022.

The incident took place after a night out on 6 May 2022, when Holder and a friend went back to the victim’s flat. Holder slept in the victim’s bed while she slept in her living room. He later woke her, pulled her onto the bed, and raped her despite her pleas for him to stop. In addition to the eight-year sentence, Holder must pay £5,000 towards prosecution costs and a victim surcharge. He is required to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before he can be considered for parole.

During the sentencing, Recorder David Chidgey described the attack as despicable sexual violence and a living nightmare. He noted that the offence was about entitlement, specifically citing Holder’s casual disregard for the victim’s right to decide what she wanted to do with her own body. The victim provided a statement to the court detailing the lasting impact the assault has had on her self-worth and relationships.

Detective Constable Elle MacLeod of the Gloucestershire Constabulary, who led the investigation for the specialist Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) team, commended the survivor for her bravery. She stated that Holder exploited the victim’s vulnerability in her own home. She added that no one is above the law, and individuals will be held accountable for their actions regardless of their status or wealth.
