Councillor Sagheer Zaman has been formally appointed as the 142nd Mayor of Warrington. The announcement took place at the annual meeting of Warrington Borough Council at the town hall on 18 May 2026.

Cllr Zaman, who represents the Fairfield and Howley ward, steps into the ceremonial role after more than 25 years of voluntary and community service in the town. During his year in office, he intends to focus on promoting unity, inclusion, and civic pride across the borough. He will be supported throughout his term by Mayoress Farah Zaman and their children.

As part of his duties as the town’s first citizen, Cllr Zaman will champion four chosen charities: the Warrington Wolves Community Foundation, Warrington Visually Impaired People, Warrington Disability Partnership, and Warrington Charities Trust. Cllr Zaman succeeds the 141st Mayor, Cllr Mo Hussain, who served for the 2025-2026 term.

The council also appointed Councillor Maureen McLaughlin, who represents Latchford West, as the new Deputy Mayor. First elected to the council in 2011, Cllr McLaughlin brings extensive experience to the role and is expected to succeed as Mayor in 2027. According to the Mayor’s role and history information provided by the council, the position of Mayor is a largely ceremonial post that chairs council meetings and serves as an official representative for the town.

Cllr Zaman brings a wealth of local experience to the position, having served on several council committees, including those focused on development management, the local economy, and traffic. He is also a founding member of the Warrington Ethnic Communities Association, where he currently serves as chair, and is a key organiser for the annual Warrington Mela, a celebration of cultural diversity in the town.
