University Centre South Essex has announced a major rebrand to position itself as the primary provider of higher education in Southend-on-Sea following the decision by the University of Essex to close its local campus.

The South Essex Colleges Group, which operates the centre, confirmed the update on 15 May 2026. The new identity is intended to reflect the institution’s role in offering career-focused, university-level courses to the local community as the University of Essex prepares to shut its Southend site at the end of summer 2026.

The University of Essex stated that the campus closure follows significant financial challenges, including a 52 percent drop in international student numbers since the 2021-22 academic year. The university is also reducing its workforce by approximately 400 full-time roles as part of its restructuring process.

Denise Brown, group chief executive of the South Essex Colleges Group, said the rebrand marks a timely evolution to keep high-quality, career-focused education at the forefront of the region. The centre continues to offer degree programmes validated by partners including the University of East Anglia, University of the Arts London, Pearson, and The Open University.

To support prospective students during this transition, the centre is holding applicant question and answer sessions on 19 May 2026 and 24 June 2026.
