Peterborough residents looking to clear out their sheds or pick up supplies for home decorating can now use a new paint reuse scheme launched by Peterborough City Council. The initiative, which began on 20 May 2026, allows locals to donate good-quality leftover paint and collect usable tins free of charge at the Household Recycling Centre in Fengate.

The service is operated in partnership with Community RePaint, a nationwide network sponsored by Dulux. To ensure the quality of the materials available, centre staff inspect all donated tins to confirm they are still in good condition before making them available for others to take home.

Councillor Chris Wiggin, Cabinet Member for Environment, welcomed the introduction of the service. He noted that the programme helps the local authority align with other areas across the country that have offer this service to their residents.

Those visiting the facility at Dodson House, Fengate, can donate or collect a variety of items, including emulsion, gloss, eggshell, satin, floor paint, masonry paint, varnish, wood stain, and tile paint. For safety reasons, the scheme cannot accept hazardous items such as paint thinners, brush cleaners, paint strippers, wood preservatives, industrial paints, aerosols, cellulose paint, or any products containing lead.

The Household Recycling Centre is open seven days a week and remains restricted to residents of Peterborough. By keeping usable paint out of the waste stream, the council aims to reduce the amount of material sent to landfills, contributing to broader environmental goals.
