Bin collections across Cheltenham will start an hour earlier than normal from Tuesday 26 May, with the borough council asking residents to put out their waste by 6am to help crews beat the heat. The change affects collections from Tuesday through to Friday 29 May, with the Cabinet Member for Waste, Recycling and Green Open Spaces Steve Harvey saying the earlier start is needed to help crews and vehicles cope in the rising temperatures and ensure all scheduled collections are completed.

The move comes as the Spring bank holiday on Monday 25 May pushes all collections back by one day, with crews also working on Saturday 30 May to catch up. Harvey said temperatures are set to rise significantly, and the earlier start will allow teams to complete their rounds before the worst of the heat. Residents are being asked to make sure their recycling boxes, food caddies, refuse bins and garden bins are at the kerbside by 6am to avoid missed collections.

The council has acknowledged the early start may cause some disturbance for residents. Harvey said crews will do their very best to be as quiet as possible while collecting in the early morning. Normal collection times are set to resume on Monday 1 June.
