Earlestown Bus Station, Market Street and Queen Street will shut from today Thursday, 28 May 2026, as long-awaited refurbishments finally get under way across the town centre. The work, originally set to start on 18 May for a six-week stint, has been expanded into a seven-and-a-half-month project that will see Queen Street remain closed until 10 January 2027.
During the closure, Warrington’s Own Buses routes 22 and 22A will follow diversion paths, missing Railway Street, Queen Street, Bridge Street, Earlestown Bus Station and Market Street. A spokesperson for the operator said, “We have been informed by Merseytravel that in addition to Market Street and Earlestown Bus Station that Queen Street, Earlestown will be closed from Thursday, 28th May until 10.01.27.” They added, “We apologise for any inconvenience.”
Passengers are being directed to alternative stops, with services 20, 22, 22A, 34, 34A, 39 and 602 all calling at St John Street outside the car park and on Haydock Street near Home Bargains. Merseytravel, which is managing the upgrades, confirmed that buses would still serve the town.
The extended timeline for Queen Street points to more substantial infrastructure work than initially planned, with the route set to be out of action until the new year while improvements are carried out. Residents and shoppers are being urged to check the latest travel information before heading out, as the changes are likely to cause disruption throughout the summer and into the autumn.
