Three new weekend and bank holiday bus services have launched across County Durham, making it easier to reach some of the region’s top attractions without a car. The Durham Dales Explorer, Time Traveller line and Tracks Through Time line began running on 23 May and will operate until 31 August 2026, connecting Durham City with Beamish Museum, Raby Castle, The Bowes Museum, High Force Waterfall and Locomotion in Shildon, among other destinations. Single adult fares start at £2.50, with those aged 21 and under paying just £1.
Funded by the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority and operated by Northstar, the services are designed to boost tourism and give residents a sustainable alternative to driving. Mayor Kim McGuinness said the county had “so much to offer, from brilliant attractions to stunning countryside” and that the new routes made it easier to enjoy great days out without relying on a car. Councillor Karen Allison, Durham County Council’s cabinet member for leisure, high streets, tourism and regeneration, added that the buses offered a great option for family days out and would help attract more visitors to the county.
The Durham Dales Explorer (873) runs from Durham City to The Auckland Project, Raby Castle, Barnard Castle, The Bowes Museum and High Force Waterfall. The Time Traveller line (874) serves Ushaw Historic House and Beamish, while the Tracks Through Time line (875) goes to Shildon and Locomotion. Children under 11 travel free during school holidays as part of the Kids Go Free initiative, with up to three children allowed per adult with a valid ticket or concessionary pass. Many venues are also offering discounts to those arriving by bus through the North East Combined Authority’s Days Out by Bus scheme.
For those planning multiple trips, an adult day ticket for unlimited bus travel within County Durham costs £6, and a regionwide adult day ticket covering bus and Metro is £7.50. Young people can get a regionwide day ticket for £3. All buses have accessible access and allow dogs on board.
