Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service has opened applications for its Fire Cadet programme, offering young people aged 13 to 17 the chance to develop practical skills and take part in community events across the county. The programme provides weekly sessions at fire stations, where cadets learn firefighting techniques, build leadership abilities and gain confidence in a team setting. Applications must be submitted by 30 June 2026.

Youth Engagement Support Officer Ed Harvey said the programme is designed to push young people out of their comfort zones. “Fire Cadets is a great opportunity for young people to push themselves, build confidence and become part of a team,” he said. “We’re looking for motivated young people who want to learn new skills, make new friends and take on challenges they can be proud of.”

Cadets attend one session a week during term time and are expected to take part in at least six community events each year, sharing fire safety advice and demonstrating equipment at local and national gatherings. No previous experience is needed—just enthusiasm, commitment and a willingness to learn. Successful applicants will be invited to an assessment centre involving an interview, team activities and practical tasks.

Further details and the online application form can be found on the Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service website.
