South Derbyshire District Council has opened free workshop places for Swadlincote residents considering self-employment, with two evening sessions booked for September at the Swadlincote Innovation Centre on George Holmes Way. The South Derbyshire Business Advice Service, which delivers the workshops, will cover everything from legal structures and tax to marketing strategy and AI basics.
The first workshop, Thinking of Starting in Business, runs from 5:30pm to 8:00pm on Monday 14 September and is designed for those contemplating a new venture or who have recently become self-employed. A second session follows on Monday 21 September from 5:30pm to 7:30pm, focusing on building a marketing strategy, identifying target audiences, website essentials and an introduction to AI. Both events are free but places are limited, and booking is available by emailing [email protected], calling 01283 595791, or completing an online form.
The workshops are held at Bob Wheeler House on the George Holmes Business Park, a facility that has operated since May 2022 and includes modern office suites and free parking. David Richards, Business Adviser at the South Derbyshire Business Advice Service, said previous attendees have launched ventures ranging from car valeting to manufacturing. “This is a great opportunity for individuals and new businesses to delve into the wealth of skills, expert advice and guidance that’s on offer,” he said, adding that hundreds of new businesses have been helped to get off on the right foot through the service, which is funded by the district council.
The council has a track record of providing ongoing support, having previously run accelerator webinars and workshops on graphic design, welding skills and green business growth. Running the sessions in the evening aims to make them accessible to people who may be working during the day. The closing date for bookings is not specified, but early registration is advised given limited capacity.
