A new casual social group for adults with ADHD and other neurodivergence has launched in Lancaster, offering a relaxed drop-in space every Tuesday morning. Founded by Nick Rosser, who was diagnosed with ADHD aged 20 and is now approaching 40, Basically What Happened Was ADHD meets at St John’s Hospice on Slyne Road between 9.30am and 11.30am.
No booking is required and residents can stay for as little or as long as they wish. Rosser described the group as “a relaxed space, a life break” where people can “pop in, vent a load of stuff that’s been going on in your life” with no expectations. He set up the venture to tackle the isolation many adults with ADHD experience, noting that around three million people in the UK live with the condition, many undiagnosed and the majority aged over 24.
The hospice, which has provided care in North Lancashire and South Lakes since 1986, hosts the group in a community partnership. Rosser explained the daily cognitive effort of living with ADHD is like “having a really strong scouse accent – while everyone else has a really strong Glaswegian accent. Everyone speaks English but you have to think a bit more about everything you say and everything they say and it can be exhausting.” He added that attendees often leave the sessions feeling better, even when their circumstances haven’t changed, calling it “that little break, to reset and quiet your brain.”
Unlike more formal support services in the area, such as those run by ADHD Lancashire and ADHD North West, the new group operates as a purely social outlet. Those interested can join a Facebook group or a WhatsApp group set up for people not on Facebook to stay in touch.
The next session takes place on Tuesday, 30 June, at St John’s Hospice, Slyne Road, LA2 6ST.
