A new county-wide programme promises 50 budget-friendly activities for Watford families this summer. Hertfordshire County Council has launched the Fifty Thrifty Summer 2026 scheme, offering options that are either free or low cost. The initiative aims to ensure that rising living costs do not stop children from enjoying the school holidays.

The 50 activities span the entire county and include the Summer Reading Challenge in libraries, visits to museums, parks, nature reserves and heritage trails. They have been chosen so that families can reach them on foot, by bike or scooter, or by taking advantage of the county’s discounted £2 bus fares. Council leader Richard Roberts acknowledged that many residents are finding it difficult to make ends meet.

The Fifty Thrifty programme has run for several years, with separate editions released for half-terms, Easter and summer. The council says the list draws on its own services, which reach 1.2 million people, as well as partners such as Herts Family Centres, Herts Archives and Local Studies, National Trust sites and the Herts Wildlife Trust. Outdoor adventures, cultural trips and free community events are all included.

Watford residents can use the scheme to discover days out anywhere in the 600-plus square miles of Hertfordshire without spending heavily on travel. The full list of activities is available on the county council’s website, giving families advance notice before the summer holidays begin.
