Free drop-in events begin across Warrington this Monday as part of national Alcohol Awareness Week, organised locally by Warrington Borough Council. Running from 6 to 12 July, the campaign carries the theme ‘Alcohol and Me’ and aims to spark honest reflection on drinking habits.

Councillor Tony Higgins, cabinet member for health, wellbeing and social care, said the week offers a chance to consider what alcohol means in daily life. A drop-in session will take place at the Living Well Hub on 6 July from 9.30am until 12.30pm, with information stalls at Warrington Hospital on 7 July and at Golden Square shopping centre on 8 July between 9am and 3pm. A football tournament runs at Whitecross Community Centre on 7 July from noon until 3pm. All events are free and open to everyone.

The campaign, coordinated nationally by charity Alcohol Change UK, moved from November to July this year and centres on a personal approach to alcohol’s effects. The charity warns that alcohol can contribute to sleepless nights, low energy, increased anxiety and longer-term risks including liver disease, high blood pressure, stroke and cancer. Residents can also take a free, non-judgemental ‘Check your drinking’ quiz on the charity’s website to understand their own drinking patterns.

Councillor Higgins added that people can find information, support or simply a conversation at the events. The council’s own alcohol support services are available for anyone seeking further help.
