Queensgate roundabout outside Peterborough Station drops to a single lane from Monday 6 July, extending the disruption already felt by passengers since a large chunk of the main car park closed in June. National Rail posted the warning on its Peterborough station page, where it advised that roads in the area are likely to be busy and journeys to the station may take longer than usual.
The squeeze is the latest in a string of changes linked to the £65 million Station Quarter regeneration, a project backed by Peterborough City Council, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, Network Rail, LNER, and others. Since 15 June, 111 spaces in the main car park have been fenced off, forcing drivers to hunt for remaining bays. National Rail told commuters to expect delays and asked motorists and taxi passengers to allow extra travel time.
The works are part of the first phase, known as City Link, which has already seen two underpasses near the roundabout filled with roughly 1,000 tonnes of concrete to create a level route. Earlier this year the council consulted on removing 35 trees from the roundabout to make way for engineering, promising 49 new trees elsewhere, along with additional shrubs, a rain garden, and gabion walls. The wider scheme aims to cut traffic over Crescent Bridge by 30 percent by opening a new western entrance and building a multi-storey car park.
For drivers shut out of the main car park, Mayor’s Walk car park on Station Road offers 262 spaces, while Spittle Bank car park on Bourges Boulevard has another 193. Both remain open throughout the construction.
When complete, the Station Quarter will deliver a double-sided station, refurbished eastern buildings, and improved pedestrian and cycle routes. The Government allocated £47.8 million from its Levelling Up fund in October 2023, with the balance expected from private partners. Peterborough City Council’s regeneration webpage carries further details on the timetable and future phases covering the adjacent North Westgate area.
