Gloucester Son Charged with Murder of Father, 80

A Gloucester man has been charged with murdering his father at a property on Alney Terrace, Gloucestershire Constabulary confirmed. Lawrence Robert Whayman, 55, stands accused of killing 80-year-old Lawrence Joseph Whayman on the evening of 2 July 2026.

Officers were called to the address at around 9pm that Thursday following reports of an injured man. The victim was found with suspected stab wounds and taken to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, where he died a short time later. A man in his fifties was arrested on suspicion of murder and remained in custody while enquiries continued. Lawrence Robert Whayman appeared before Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court via video link on Saturday 4 July, speaking only to confirm his name and date of birth. Presiding justice Peter Gray remanded him into custody and sent the case to Bristol Crown Court, where he is next due to appear on 7 July 2026.

In a statement issued the day after the incident, Chief Superintendent Rebecca Love sought to reassure the community. “We understand the concern this incident will have caused within the local community. Officers will be carrying out proactive reassurance patrols in the area today and continuing their house-to-house enquiries,” she said. Police confirmed there is no wider threat to the public and that officers would remain at the scene throughout the weekend while investigations continue.

The victim’s next of kin have been informed, and the case now moves to Bristol Crown Court for further proceedings.
