Charities and community groups in Basingstoke and Deane can now access a free confidential service to resolve internal disputes, following a partnership between Basingstoke Voluntary Action and the Mediation Agency. The Early Resolution Service offers a structured initial conversation to help organisations tackle conflicts before they escalate into formal disputes.

The free triage involves a confidential assessment where trained mediators listen to the situation, help identify what is happening, and outline practical options. “We will: Listen to your situation, Help you understand what’s happening, Identify practical options, Signpost you to the most appropriate next step. There is no cost for this initial support,” the service states. Issues covered include trustee disagreements, staff or volunteer conflict, leadership tensions and communication breakdowns.

A published case study on BVA’s website illustrates how the approach works in practice, showing a scenario where volunteer conflict arising from a misunderstanding was resolved through mediation before it affected the wider team. The initiative draws on established best practice that confirms early intervention is more effective than waiting for grievances to harden into formal complaints.

The service is delivered by an experienced network of mediators, with trained volunteers handling early-stage enquiries under professional supervision. Where further help is needed, charities can access mediation, conflict coaching or facilitated conversations at discount rates. It remains available only to organisations that are current BVA members.

Groups seeking support can contact the Mediation Agency on 03300 431 757, by email at [email protected], or request a callback through mediatordesk.com.
