A nine-week summer operation to clamp down on town centre crime and anti-social behaviour has launched in Northampton. Northamptonshire Police, West Northamptonshire Council, and Northampton Business Improvement District began Operation Workforce on 7 July 2026, with joint patrols already targeting hotspots.
Chief Inspector Nic Davis-Lyons said the operation will deliver visible, targeted policing that reassures the public while tackling offenders. The initiative focuses on four key areas: anti-social behaviour, shoplifting and robbery, serious violence, and drug-related harm. Specialist tactics including knife arches and possible drugs detection deployments will be used, with a different crime theme each week running through to September.
Free2Talk’s youth bus will visit Market Square on 4 August and 25 August 2026, from 1pm to 4pm, offering support and advice alongside youth workers and young ambassadors. Joint patrols involving police, council teams, and BID representatives will identify issues such as anti-social behaviour hotspots, empty buildings, and locations that attract crime. A previous summer iteration in 2025 saw a drop in reported shop thefts and 52 arrests in its first few weeks.
Neighbourhood Sergeant Anna Wyburn stressed the operation responds directly to community concerns. Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Danielle Stone added that visible policing and partnership working should deter anyone thinking of coming to Northampton to commit crime. Councillor Charlie Hastie, deputy leader of the council, said the approach combines prevention, education, and enforcement to keep the town centre safe and welcoming.
