An Amber Heat Health Alert now covers Cheshunt and the wider Broxbourne area, running from 9am on 8 July until 9pm on 12 July 2026. The Herts and West Essex Integrated Care System published the warning on its local services page for the town.

The UK Health Security Agency escalated the alert from yellow to amber on 6 July as forecasts showed a significant rise in temperatures across the East of England. Five other English regions share the amber status, while northern areas remain under a lower yellow alert. Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, said that although health impacts are not expected to reach the levels of the late-June heatwave, older adults and those with pre-existing conditions are still at risk. He added, “Sustained periods of warm weather can result in serious negative health outcomes across the population, so it is important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.”

Under the UKHSA and Met Office Weather-Health alerting system, an amber warning signals likely increased pressure on health care services from vulnerable groups and a higher health risk for people aged over 65 or with respiratory and cardiovascular conditions. This is the third heat-health alert issued in England during 2026. A red alert covered parts of the country in late June before being de-escalated and extended.

The Herts and West Essex ICS directs residents to NHS online advice on staying well in hot weather, which includes keeping hydrated, avoiding sun exposure during the hottest hours, and checking on neighbours who may struggle in the heat. The alert extends across the entire East of England region.
