Norwich families can now book places on the Big Norfolk Holiday Fun summer programme, which returns with free and paid activity sessions for children across the county from 20 July. The scheme offers organised sports, arts, outdoor adventures and other workshops for children aged 5 to 16, or 4 if they are already in school, running weekdays until 2 September.

Children who receive means-tested free school meals can claim free spaces that include a nutritious meal each day, while paid spots are available on many activities for those who do not qualify. The programme is delivered by Active Norfolk in partnership with Norfolk County Council, using funding from the Department for Education. Cllr John Fisher, cabinet member for children’s services, said the activities give children fun experiences while helping parents reduce childcare costs during the long break.

In Norwich, one confirmed provider is Pav Fun Ball Academy at FDC on Clover Hill Road in Bowthorpe, running football sessions from 10am to 2pm during the first two weeks of the programme. Families can book through the Eequ platform, which has replaced the council’s old booking system this year and does not require a special code. The government’s Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, which underpins the scheme, has been extended for a further three years following national lobbying, meaning the support will continue through to 2029.

Each child eligible for free school meals can access up to 16 days of activity across the summer, with a wide range of options that also includes science workshops, cooking and performing arts. Feedback from previous years showed many participants were more physically active and more willing to try healthier foods. Spaces are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so the council urges families to book as soon as possible.
