Hemlington Resurfacing Delayed After Voids Found Under Roads

Six Hemlington streets waiting for carriageway resurfacing have been put on hold indefinitely after crews found voids beneath the road surface. Ashford Avenue, Corby Avenue, Downside Road, Endsleigh Drive, Priory Road, Acklam and Stonyhurst Avenue were all due for full closures and new top layers, but Middlesbrough Council confirmed the works are postponed while the ground conditions are investigated.

The subsurface gaps, described by the council as voids, must be assessed and made safe before any resurfacing can begin. No restart date has been published, and the council’s roadworks page lists all six locations as postponed. When the closures eventually go ahead, signed diversions will direct traffic along Levick Crescent, Manton Avenue and Collinson Avenue.

The six streets sit together in the council’s carriageway resurfacing programme for Hemlington, suggesting they were planned as a single batch. Voids of this kind can stem from historical mine workings, erosion of the sub-base or groundwater movement, and typically require specialist investigation. Residents who want to report a problem or ask about the timetable can contact the highways team on 01642 300508.

A separate overnight carriageway resurface on Glendale Road is still expected to take place during July or August. That job will run from 7pm to midnight, with a date still to be confirmed, and is expected to cause less disruption than a full daytime closure.
