South Derbyshire District Council (SDDC) is recruiting a permanent Sheltered Housing Support Officer to join its Independent Living Team in Swadlincote. The role — advertised as a Sheltered Housing Support Officer and offered with full‑time or part‑time options — will support older and vulnerable residents living in the council’s sheltered housing.
The appointee will be based at the Civic Offices on Civic Way in Swadlincote (DE11 0AH) and will carry out welfare checks, monitor communal health and safety risks, and manage the council’s Careline telecare service. Careline is the council’s 24/7 community alarm service, providing an emergency response if a resident falls or has another urgent need.
The recruitment comes at a time when SDDC is addressing issues raised by the Regulator of Social Housing. The Regulator published a Regulatory Judgement on 9 August 2024 that awarded the council a consumer grade of C3, identifying serious failings in the council’s delivery of aspects of the Safety and Quality Standard and the Transparency, Influence and Accountability Standard. The council says it is implementing improvements across its housing services as part of that work.
SDDC’s Independent Living Team manages roughly 300 sheltered housing units across more than 20 schemes in the district. This includes large extra‑care schemes such as Oakland Village in Swadlincote, where on‑site support staff and partner organisations (including Trident) provide a primary point of contact for residents who need help with health, safety or daily‑living issues.
By filling the Sheltered Housing Support Officer post, the council says it aims to help residents remain independent in their own homes for longer and reduce the need for moves into more intensive residential care, while maintaining access to emergency support through the Careline service.
