A 32-year-old man from Rayleigh, Essex, has been sent to prison for 14 months after leading police on a dangerous high-speed chase through local streets. Kieron Mitchell, of Highfield Gardens, was sentenced on 10 January 2025 at Basildon Crown Court after being convicted of dangerous driving, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, and driving without insurance.
The incident began when Mitchell failed to stop for officers during a routine patrol near the A127 at Rayleigh Weir. Essex Police said he drove at more than double the speed limit in built-up areas and mounted pavements to avoid being caught.
Officers from Essex Police’s Rochford District used dashcam footage and witness accounts from local residents to build the case. An official spokesperson for the Rochford District said: “The dangerous driving displayed by Mitchell could have had catastrophic consequences for innocent road users. This custodial sentence reflects the severity of his actions.”
In addition to his prison term, Mitchell was disqualified from driving for three years. Essex Police said the sentence aligns with ongoing local road-safety work, including the Safer Essex Roads Partnership’s Vision Zero strategy, which aims to eliminate road deaths and serious injuries in the county.
