Residents in Rayleigh, Essex, have the chance to learn British Sign Language during weekly sessions at The Mill Arts & Events Centre through February 11, 2026. These beginner classes provide a way for locals to communicate more easily with deaf and hard-of-hearing neighbours and volunteer groups.

The sessions take place every Wednesday with two different time slots available from 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Participants learn the finger-spelling alphabet, basic conversational signs, and general deaf awareness in a classroom setting.

Managed by Rochford District Venues, the training is often supported by regional specialists like Sign Away BSL. This local effort follows the British Sign Language Act 2022, which officially recognised the language to help improve public accessibility.

According to Rayleigh Town Council, these classes are part of a wider project to keep the community connected. The Mill has been a vital part of the town for over 50 years and continues to host variety of local training and cultural events.
