South Derbyshire District Council (SDDC) issued a statement on January 30, 2026, about plans to clear a large amount of rubbish along the A38 near Willington, Derbyshire. The statement follows many complaints from local residents and drivers, who have described the roadside as “unsightly and hazardous.”

SDDC said it is working with National Highways to carry out a thorough cleaning of the grass verges on the A38 between the Toyota Island (A50 interchange) and the Willington/Findern turn-off. The high‑intensity deep clean is scheduled to start during the week of February 16, 2026, and is planned to take place at night between 20:00 and 06:00 to keep traffic moving and ensure worker safety; National Highways will provide required safety escorts and traffic management.

Officials said they will step up enforcement to catch people who throw litter from their vehicles by using mobile CCTV in the area. The council is asking anyone with dashcam footage of people dumping waste to contact the Clean and Green Team via the council website, the ‘My South Derbyshire’ online portal, the FixMyStreet app, or by emailing [email protected]. The council said those caught will face the maximum legal penalties (Fixed Penalty Notices) now in force under its increased fine structure.

More details about the cleanup schedule and how to report issues are available on the SDDC News Page. Members of the community can also report messy streets or illegal dumping directly through the council’s online reporting tools.
