The Environment Agency has issued a Flood Alert for Gateshead, Tyne and Wear on 3 February 2026, warning that flooding is possible in several areas. The alert follows a period of sustained heavy rainfall combined with high spring tides, which have raised water levels in the Tyne estuary and in tributaries including the River Team and River Derwent.

Monitoring data and forecasts indicate the catchment is saturated after January’s heavy rainfall, and the Environment Agency has warned that the high tide arriving this afternoon could push water onto riverside footpaths and minor roads, potentially causing travel disruption.

People living in Dunston, Blaydon and Teams are being encouraged to prepare flood kits and to keep away from riverbanks. Gateshead Council says it has crews on standby to clear debris from key culverts and blocked drains to help surface water drain away.

The situation will be a test for flood resilience measures included in the council’s Corporate Plan and the 2025/26 action plan. While the alert is at the lowest level (‘Flood Alert’), businesses on the Team Valley Trading Estate are being asked to remain vigilant, as the River Team can rise rapidly in certain conditions.
