Gateshead Central Library in Tyne and Wear is launching its first Festival of Compassion on 12 February 2026 to help residents connect with local support services and meet new people. The event runs from 10:00 to 14:00 and is designed to create a friendly space where people can talk about difficult topics such as getting older, looking after loved ones, and dealing with loss.
The festival is a joint project between Gateshead Council and Compassionate Gateshead. Visitors can browse a marketplace of support stalls, listen to expert talks, and take part in workshops aimed at making sure nobody in the borough has to face grief or caregiving challenges alone.
The event will be officially launched by Mayor Councillor Freda Geddes and will feature special guests and community experts. The launch forms part of the library’s 100th anniversary programme, marking 100 years since the library first opened in 1926.
Residents can also visit the library’s MakerPlace, a creative studio equipped with 3D printers, a laser cutter and other digital making tools. During the festival, this space will be used for hands-on projects to help people engage with one another in a relaxed setting.
Information about the full list of activities and support groups attending the day can be found on the OurGateshead community website. The event organisers aim to continue developing the library as a community hub where people can easily find the help they need while connecting with their neighbours.
