Lancaster Main Roads To Be Gritted Ahead Of Snow Warning

Lancashire County Council gritters will treat priority routes across Lancaster tonight as temperatures are expected to drop. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice that comes into force at 6:00 PM on 4 February 2026 and remains in place until 9:00 AM on 5 February 2026.

Crews will focus on Priority 1 routes — including major A-roads, routes to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and key links used by emergency services. While priority routes are being pre-salted, secondary and residential streets may remain untreated, so drivers are encouraged to take extra care on their journeys.

Lancashire County Council said: “Our crews have been out nearly every day since the start of 2026. While all priority routes are being treated tonight, we cannot grit every road in the county. We ask residents to stick to the main network where possible and never assume a road has been salted just because it looks clear.” The council advises checking the Live Gritting Map before travelling to see which routes have been treated.

The council follows its Winter Service Plan to decide which roads to prioritise when ice is forecast. Forecasters expect slippery surfaces on pavements and cycle paths overnight, with some snow possible on higher ground near the Trough of Bowland.
