Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council has launched a public appeal asking residents across the borough to nominate buildings, landmarks and sites for its Local Heritage List. Nominations are open in February 2026 and can be submitted through the council’s online nomination form or via the Planning Policy contact form.

The Local Heritage List is intended to identify non-designated heritage assets — places important to local character and community memory that do not meet the criteria for national statutory listing. When adopted, entries on the list form part of the evidence base used in planning decisions so an asset’s significance can be treated as a material consideration when proposals to alter or demolish it are assessed. The initiative follows guidance from Historic England on local heritage listing and the council’s recent Heritage Strategy work.

The appeal comes as the council prepares to replace the current Local Plan 2006–2026 with a new plan for the next period. The council says formalising locally significant sites now will help ensure the borough’s architectural and social character is considered as planning policies are updated.

Cllr Paul Williams, Heritage Champion for Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council, said: “Our borough’s heritage is something everyone at the council, politicians and staff alike, is immensely proud of. It is vital that we identify what matters to our communities now, so we can protect it for the future.” (HBBC news, 17 June 2025)

Residents are asked to focus nominations on places that demonstrate local character or hold social value — for example, historic pubs, workshops, or alleyways — and to provide evidence against the council’s selection criteria. The Local Heritage List page on the council website explains the selection criteria and how nominations will be assessed.

The project follows other recent local heritage successes, including the Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre being honoured at local tourism awards in December 2025.
